The Young
Razzcals Jazz Project Summer Tour 2004
In July /
August of 2004 the YRJP completed a twelve day tour in New Mexico and
Colorado. We spent 25 hours working on our newest CD at the Broadway
Recording Studio in Albuquerque, NM.
The
tour began in Albuquerque at Rex's Hamburgers where manager, Michael
Alderson, former Young Razzcal, sat in on a couple numbers. (See scrapbook
for photos) Then to Holy Rosary Catholic Church, where we received a very
warm welcome, nice tips too. Our final concert in Albuquerque was at the
world's largest Mexican restaurant, El Pinto, where we performed two sets.
By
now, we were sounding pretty good. The saxes were flying through Donna Lee
and Commin' Home Baby. Spain was sounding great, and Pick up the Pieces
was always a crowd pleaser.
It
was time to move on, so we headed to Silverton, CO. What a beautiful
little town. Here we played two nights at the Trail's End. The place was
packed both nights and folks were buying the CD's. Our pictures were up
all over town. Very cool for a group of middle and high school kids from
Virginia.
We
continued up and around the beautiful Colorado mountains to Telluride
after a dip in the hot springs in Ouray. In Telluride we had several
engagements start with a small ensemble at the VIP reception held at Gray
Head. This was a party for all of the jazz greats who were in town for the
festival. We also had two concerts in City Park, the Elks Lodge and of
course Main Stage on Sunday.
In
Telluride we had the opportunity to play along side jazz greats like
Richie Cole, Larry Coryelle and Hod O'Brien to name a few. Hod actually
traveled with us and accompanied our vocal numbers on the road and on our
CD. What a great experience for all of us, students and parents.
